Medical Laboratory Technician Program at SWOSU Sayre

The Profession

Medical Laboratory Technicians are mid-level laboratory supervisors. They perform a wide range of routine tests and laboratory procedures. Technicians may prepare specimens and operate automatic analyzers or they may perform manual tests following detailed instructions.

Employment

Most medical laboratory technicians are employed in hospital laboratories. Others are employed in physicians’ private laboratories and clinics, by city, state, and federal health agencies, in industrial medical laboratories, in pharmaceutical firms, and in numerous public and private research programs dedicated to the study of specific disease. Salaries vary depending on the employer and geographic location. Based on a recent survey published in Medical Laboratory Observer the median entry-level salary was $23,000 and the average salary was $27,000.

Curriculum/Accreditation

The Associate in Applied Science degree for the Medical Laboratory Technician is offered through the SWOSU Sayre Campus. Following completion of the two year Associate Degree the student is eligible for certification by SWOSU and the American Medical Technologists (AMT) to take the registry examination.
