Southwestern Oklahoma State University

Letter from the Chair

Dear Student and Parents:

Thank you for your interest in the Biology program at Southwestern Oklahoma State University!  Our exciting and challenging program and experienced faculty will help prepare you for a successful future.  The Department of Biological Sciences offers you a number of advantages:

  • Achieving career goals.  Biology majors have found employment with state and federal organizations, private industry, research laboratories, schools, and the military.  Of the Biology majors who have applied to professional and graduate schools in the last seven years, 94% have been accepted!
  • Dedicated faculty.  Eight of the ten faculty in our department have a Ph.D. with a combined total of over 145 years of teaching experience.  Faculty provide tutoring and give individual attention to students.
  • Specialized and personal advisement. Faculty advisors work with professional schools and attend workshops to provide the best career plan for you.  Advisees work one-on-one with advisors.
  • Small class size.  This is especially true of our laboratories, where enrollment rarely exceeds 24 students.  All of these laboratories are taught by the faculty in the recently renovated Science Building.
  • Biology Club.  This active student organization, established in 1930, arranges for seminar speakers, schedules tours of professional schools and research laboratories, and plans service and social events throughout the year.
  • Experience beyond the classroom.  Faculty will assist you in locating summer programs and internships that will complement your studies at Southwestern and contribute to your career development.   Several faculty have developed active research programs involving undergraduates.

If you would like additional information about the Biology program at Southwestern, please let us know.  You are welcome to tour the department or sit in on a class or two.We can also arrange for you to meet with a faculty advisor who specializes in your area of interest.

Sincerely,

Joseph D. Maness
