A Unique Program

The Health Care Administration Major (Administration of Allied Health Services) at SWOSU is designed for individuals who desire a challenging career in an administrative position.

Managing the complex activities of a modern health care facility is a demanding task which calls for the versatile skills of a trained administrator. Students enrolled in the Health Care Administration program are exposed to a wide array of educational topics with a supportive liberal arts curriculum in the sciences, social sciences, business administration, and humanities.

Students may select a minor. Possibilities include;

Biology
Business Management
Computer Science
Gerontology
Psychology
Social Work

The Health Care Administration major leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree which opens the door to a variety of career opportunities in health administration. Some graduates may choose to undertake advanced graduate studies in health administration or to prepare for educational opportunities in related allied health programs.

Presently 48 major universities in the United States and Canada offer graduate degrees in health care administration. Typically, graduate degrees in health care administration consist of 1-2 years of academic study and may include an administrative residency in a health care facility.

Second Major Option

SWOSU offers a B.S. in Health Information Management. Many core courses are the same for both the Health Information Management and the Health Care Administration programs. By completing the HIM program in lieu of an additional minor the student may complete requirements for two majors for a total of 141 hours plus the 8 week internship. At the completion of both majors, students elect whether to receive a B.S. in Health Information Management or Health Care Administration. Both are listed on the transcript as majors. To obtain two degrees, and additional minor is required.
