Letter from the Chair
Chair: Dr. Kelley Logan
The faculty of the Language and Literature Department prides themselves in preparing students for the many professions that await them in the work force. From your Composition classes to your Capstone, our doctoral-level faculty will enjoy mentoring you and providing you with the skills to connect complex ideas and articulate your thoughts—skills which employers find highly desirable and are at the heart of the Language and Literature Department at SWOSU. The Department also provides several outlets for intellectual and creative socializing such as clubs which meet regularly and take field trips to plays, poetry/fiction readings, and cultural events.
A degree in English equips you with an understanding of human emotion and motivation, critical thinking skills, and a knowledge of literature to help you find a sense of who you are and your place in the world. Moreover, you can tailor your English degree to meet your specific interests. You have a choice of three emphases as an English major: Literature Emphasis, Writing Emphasis, or English Education. We prepare English majors to enter the field of education, editing, publication, marketing, graduate school, law school, and more. With courses such as Creative Writing of Fiction, Shakespeare in Context, and World Folk Literature, this degree is as diverse or concentrated as you would like for it to be.
If you are interested in a Spanish major, our Spanish program is designed to help you develop your skills in speaking, reading, and writing the language. Courses range from Hispanic Life & Culture and Hispanic Literature to an opportunity for study abroad. Spanish skills gained with a major or a minor make you a very marketable person when looking at all sorts of jobs.
