TYPICAL RECENT TYPES OF SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS AT SWOSU

Cindy Carley (Language Arts)—Communication 3543

Students have done an Alcohol Awareness Brochure, flyers and other publicity, decorated and administered food drop boxes, etc. for Weatherford Ministerial Alliance, Food Pantry Task Force, Little Bird Health Care (now Corn Heritage of Weatherford), and other agencies. These projects accounted for 23% of the students’ grades, including six different components, four group and two individual components.

Diana Knox (Nursing)—Clinical III 4176

Students have assisted the personnel of specific agencies with assessment, planning, and providing interventions for needs of clients, as well as evaluating results. Agencies include Agape Clinic, Blaine Co. Health Dept., Cedar Canyon, and SWOSU Health Services. Students are evaluated on written work, observations, and input from agencies.

Madeline Baugher (Computer Science)—Web Site Design 3913

Students have designed web sites for community businesses and organizations, including the Thomas Stafford Museum, Southwest Orthotic Lab, and Clinton Walk for Life. The design was worth 25% of the final grade.

Dr. Don Wilson (Education)—Media and Technology

The university students have served as mentors for U.S. Grant High School students, reading and commenting on their class work in a virtual learning community. ALCA Learning Communities has provided software for this project.

Dr. Ann Russell (Education)—Diagnostic Practices in Teaching Reading 4443

Students tutored remedial readers in fourteen visits in the public schools, reflecting on their experiences in lesson plans submitted to the professor.

Debbie McFarlin (Social Work)—Social Work Group Practice 4613

Students conducted educational/support groups for a teenage male population at group home sites connected with the SWOSU Adventure Programs and also did outreach to the elderly at Little Bird Health Care. These were graded activities designated in goal and objective statements.

Greg Holm (HPER)—ATEP 3733 and ATEP 4823 (Athletic Training Education Program)

Students have done clinical assessment, planning, and application of skills in various patient care settings under supervision of agency personnel. Agencies have included Integris Regional Hospital, Regeneration Physical Therapy of Weatherford, and the Oklahoma RedHawks. Evaluation included clinical evaluation inventories, case presentations, and reflective observation entries.

Dr. Mary Aspedon (Education)—Fundamentals of Curriculum Planning 5233

This class participated with parents, community members, teachers, and school administrators to develop or evaluate a school’s curriculum plan and board policy on curriculum in schools throughout Western Oklahoma—Altus, Arapaho, Burns Flat-Dill City, Canute, Elk City, Clinton, etc. The students submitted a written summary of their activities, including a narrative of interviews with the constituencies of these schools.

Dr. Elgenia French (Pharmacy)—Pharmacy Care Lab II 4004

Students volunteered for 45 minutes at Agape Free Health Clinic, filling prescriptions under the supervision of a registered pharmacist, and then completing a reflective paper on the experience for 50 points credit.
