Each summer, the Southwestern Oklahoma State University campus is home of the annual Tech Trek camp for girls in Oklahoma. It’s a week-long math and science camp designed by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to create interest, excitement, and self-confidence in young women entering the eighth grade. Why Tech Trek?

stafford museumSTEM careers provide highly stable, well-paying jobs. In turn, more young women entering STEM programs provide diverse perspectives from a deeper talent pool – a win-win for the U.S. economy.

Tech Trek empowers middle school girls to begin a successful path toward AP science and math courses in high school, college, and entering the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) workforce. Tech Trek has been in existence in California since 1998 – it has been a huge success, serving over 9000 girls across eight college campuses. In 2012, the National AAUW in cooperation with the California AAUW decided to expand Tech Trek nationwide.

Members of the AAUW Weatherford branch, in partnership with SWOSU, were chosen to host one of four pilot Tech Trek camp sites outside of California in 2013. In turn, they received $10,000 in start-up costs, a Tech Trek tool kit of ideas and training, and the directive to create an educational and inspirational program for young girls featuring STEM activities unique to Western Oklahoma. In 2017, to enable Tech Trek to expand to more than 20 locations across the United States, AAUW is providing $5000 to existing camps.  Therefore, additional funding is being generously provided by Oklahoma businesses, non-profit organizations, and individuals (see .  If you would like to donate, please visit the SWOSU Foundation website (www.standingfirmly.comgivetoswosu) and designate your tax-deductible gift to Tech Trek @ SWOSU.
