Minors within the Department Of Social Sciences

Criminal Justice—an 18 minor intended for students desiring a basic understanding of the criminal justice system, criminology, and human social behavior.  Students majoring in other social and behavior sciences often choose criminal justice as their minor.    

History—an 18 hour minor where students must take nine hours of upper division American history, six hours of upper division European/World History, and three upper division hours in the history area of their choice.   Students are attracted to the history minor due to its emphasis on writing and critical thinking as well as their enjoyment of the study of history. 

Political Science—an 18 hour minor intended to prepare non-political science majors for law school, teach citizenship to all students, and support all disciplines in equipping students with skills required in the market place.

American Indian Studies—a 20 hour program intended to serve American Indians in western Oklahoma as well as other tribes around the state, and other students interested in American Indian life and culture.

Economics—the minor in economics consists of 18 hours intended to equip students with the analytical tools necessary to develop a solid understanding of economic and human behavior.

International Studies—the minor is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of history and contemporary cultures along with issues association with interaction among and between cultures and nation-states.  Students will be exposed to international law and politics, as well as diversity in art, language, and contemporary cultures.

Pre-law—a pre-professional minor designed for non-political science majors who intend to enter law school upon graduation from Southwestern.
