Is a writing project giving you writer's cramp?
Are you struggling to get around a writer's block?
Did your teacher ask you to revise and revise again?

The Writing Center Can Help!

The Writing Center is located in the Al Harris Library - Basement B3.
Students working on papers, speeches, or presentations may drop in and see a Writing Center consultant. Call 774-7083 to ask for an appointment or e-mail us at writingcenter@swosu.edu.

Students at all levels, writing papers in any discipline, may benefit from discussing their writing with trained Writing Center student consultants. Faculty are also welcome to bring their writing projects for discussion with our tutors. Consultants will be happy to discuss papers at any stage of development, even before there is a draft, and students are welcome to attend sessions more than once while working on a project. Both strong writers and struggling writers can enjoy receiving thoughtful feedback on papers, speeches, and presentations.

Note: Students speaking English as a Second Language are always welcome at the Writing Center. In addition to the help the Writing Center tutors can give, Dr. Reimers also has information about the availability of private tutoring for ESL students.

If you are interested in becoming a Writing Center tutor, please ask Dr. Reimers about the peer tutoring course offered each spring and fall semester. This course provides the necessary composition theory and actual practical experience required for all writing tutors. Taking the peer tutoring course will not guarantee employment in the Writing Center but is a requirement for consideration. Students who have taken the course have stated that the course helped them with their own writing. The course is a good resume item because it provides techniques for working one-on-one with people, a necessary skill in almost all work environments. While English and communications majors are often well suited for Writing Center work, we would like to have tutors from many disciplines, broadening our knowledge base in the special kinds of writing required in various fields.

Faculty are encouraged to send students to the Writing Center. If a faculty member would like to take an entire class to the Writing Center to show students where it is, it may be possible to arrange for a consultant to meet the class and explain what we do and what we do not do. Call the Writing Center (774-7083) or Dr. Reimers (774-3244) to make arrangements. We also appreciate having faculty members send over copies of assignments and possibly discussing requirements of assignments with tutors so that we may serve students and faculty better. Writing Center consultations are considered to be confidential, so tutors are not at liberty to discuss individual students and their sessions with faculty members.
