E-mail Information
Southwestern Oklahoma State University now offers campus-wide e-mail and departmental calendaring services. These services are designed to seamlessly meet the needs of the entire university using Outlook 2003, a part of Microsoft’s Office XP suite.
Microsoft Exchange is the e-mail server (computer) software that actually stores your mailbox, public folders, contacts, and calendar. This server is located in the ITS Computer Room, but your mailboxes can be accessed by a variety of software clients (programs).
Outlook 2003 is Microsoft's main Exchange client (program) and the software runs on your office computer. It provides the most complete Exchange experience and environment because it can talk directly to the Exchange server and was designed to take advantage of all of the available features. It provides e-mail, calendaring, a to-do list, and many other features, all integrated into an easy-to-use environment.
Outlook is accessed by clicking the Microsoft Office Outlook icon (yellow letter/clock) located on your desktop or Launch bar and should be used when accessing e-mail from your office.

Webmail provides a similar experience to the full Outlook client. However, instead of running a program on your computer, Webmail is accessed through a Web browser and is accessible from any computer that has an Internet connection (work, home, etc.). To access Webmail, simply enter webmail.swosu.edu into your browser's address box or click Webmail under the Faculty & Staff link of the Southwestern Oklahoma State University homepage (www.swosu.edu).
There are two programs used for Webmail. The first is the Microsoft client Outlook Web Access (OWA) Premium. In order to utilize this highest level of Webmail functionality, you must be using Internet Explorer 5.x or higher on PC Windows systems.
While OWA Premium does not support the complete set of features offered by the full Outlook client, it does give users access to their own calendars, public folders, and Exchange mail folders from anywhere in the world. The current version of OWA Premium also includes optional spell-checking and the ability to create certain server-based mailbox rules.
For more detailed information please refer to the Online Documentation in the OWA Premium program, or refer to the following documents:
Outlook Web Access (OWA) Standard is the software supported when using Netscape, Internet Explorer (versions earlier than 5.x), or any MAC Browser. While most of the OWA Premium features are available, functionality is slightly more limited.
