Balance Improvement and Stress Management Based on Medical Tai Chi

Balance Improvement and Stress Management Based on Medical Tai Chi Continuing Education (CE) Activity is a two-hour, one session activity designed to promote healthy relaxation.  The activity is designed for those who want to improve their flexibility and balance; aid in injury avoidance, especially falling; and it is effective in stress management.  This activity includes both standing and seated energy exercises and promotes healthy relaxation.

Participants will learn the basic understanding of the origins and current nature of Tai Chi as a world-wide form of exercise. Participants will become familiar with the precautions one should follow to practice the exercises safely.  It will aid in achieving a foundation of correct and effective postures.  Participants will be able to perform the basic movements with the guidance of the instructor or the instructional video.  These exercises are appropriate for individuals of all ages.

Instructor Biography:

Dr. Robert (Sam) Lackey is a faculty alumnus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) retiring from SWOSU in May, 1999. Dr. Lackey currently instructs Continuing Education Activities (CE) at SWOSU, such as, Personal Safety Training and Tai Chi for Life: Relaxation and Teacher Training. Dr. Lackey has expertise and experience in Personal Safety Training and Tai Chi. Since 2004, Dr. Lackey has provided Personal Safety Training as a Continuing Education Activity each spring and fall semester. In September, 2006 he gained knowledge and certification training in Dr. Paul Lam’s Sun Style “Tai Chi for Arthritis” program and began Tai Chi CE Activities at SWOSU during the fall semester.

Alice B. Lackey graduated from and received national teacher certification as a teacher of Dr. Paul Lam’s Tai Chi for Arthritis program conducted at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa.  She has a CPR (Adult, Child, and Infant) certification plus is trained by the West-Central Oklahoma office of the American Red Cross to administer Standard First Aid.  She has successfully completed all SWOSU CE activities on Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Personal Safety Training.
