Supplemental Instruction
Who is a Supplemental Instructor?
Supplemental Instructors are students who have successfully completed their sophomore year and are juniors, seniors, or graduate students. They will be trained to tutor and provide help to the recruited SURE-STEP students. The SI’s will be available by appointment to arrange tutoring sessions in the STEM areas.
The program will recruit 5 SI’s covering all STEM areas.
For first year students, Supplemental Instruction (SI) will be offered in five important disciplines: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science. The focus of SI is on both process and content. Therefore, learning/studying strategies are integrated into the course content during the SI sessions. Student SI leaders have successfully completed the course and will facilitate the learning of the course in two to three hour-long sessions per week.
Benefits of a SI include:
- Improves student grades, in targeted courses
- Reduces the attrition rate, within those courses
- Increases the eventual graduation rates of students
Students who complete the Bridge Program successfully will be entered in the SURE-STEP program and will receive a$1,000 stipend and 6 credit hours per semester waiver for the first year to those students that are selected for the program.
The bridge to college, academic support, research outreach, and internship components of SURE-STEP will provide enrichment opportunities for STEM students so that they will develop a valid, total educational experience. Increasing the number of undergraduate students obtaining degrees in STEM fields will provide a workforce that is prepared to ensure a healthy economy, respond to demands for national security, and maintain and elevate the quality of life, and standard of living in the United States through technological and scientific advancements.
