Athletic Hall of Fame
Gary Abercrombie - 2007
Abercrombie, a graduate of Hollis High School, was a three-sport star for the Bulldogs during the early 1960’s. He was one of only a handful of athletes in school history to earn 12 varsity letters where he excelled in football, basketball and track. Abercrombie became the first Bulldog starting quarterback when he took over duties in the Bulldogs’ opener in 1960 against Sam Houston State. He was a four-time, all-conference performer in track where he excelled in the high jump clearing 6 feet, five inches.
He was two-time all-conference selection in football and averaged just over 20 points his junior and senior years on the basketball team. Abercrombie graduated from SWOSU in 1964 and later earned his master’s degree in 1967. He spent 35 years as a basketball coach and was district or conference coach-of-the-year 12 times. He won four state titles at three different high schools, Liberal (Kan.), Amarillo (Texas), and Clayton (N.M.).
