Carlton (Buck) Buchanan was an Elk City native that joined the Southwestern football team in 1970. Buchanan earned a starting position as a freshman at defensive tackle. He quickly became a contributor for the Bulldogs and was a four year letter winner and member of nationally ranked conference championship teams in 1970 and 1971. Buchanan earned first team all conference defensive honors, and honorable mention All American. Following his career at Southwestern, Buchanan was a 17th round selection of the Cleveland Browns in the 1974 NFL Draft, making him the first Bulldog drafted to the NFL. Buck later signed as a free agent with the New York Giants before deciding to become an educator and coach.
