Orville Long - 1990
A graduate of Geary High School, Long enrolled at Southwestern in 1946 after serving three years in the United States Navy. Long was a member of the school’s great post-war teams and lettered in wrestling, football and baseball. As a wrestler, he won both the conference title and the National AAU title at 155 pounds. He was captain of the 1949 football team and was later voted by his teammates as the Foreman Award winner, an award given to the team’s Most Valuable Player. He began his career as a coach and teacher in 1955 at Caldwell, Kansas before moving on to Cordell High School for the next 28 years. At Cordell, he helped re-establish a wrestling program that had not existed since the early 1930’s.
