Arthur Sweet - 1985
A Mangum native, Sweet held the distinction of graduating with the highest grade point average of any male at Southwestern when he received his degree in 1933. Outside of the classroom, Sweet won the National AAU Wrestling Championship at 175 pounds and was captain of the Bulldogs’ undefeated 1933 football team. He served as captain of the 1937 United States National Wrestling Team and brought home a gold medal in the 190-pound weight class at the Pan American Games. Sweet taught and coached at Walters, Duncan and Bixby High Schools before later serving as superintendent at Prairie Grove High School in Arkansas. He then moved back to Oklahoma and chaired the English Department at Northern Oklahoma College and also started the school’s first wrestling program.
