Dr. William G. "Bill" Bernhardt - 1991
William G. (Bill) Bernhardt was born in Hitchcock, Oklahoma. His parents were Samuel C. Bernhardt and Bertha Irion Bernhardt who resided most of their lives on a farm in the Hitchcock area. His grandfather, George Bernhardt, homesteaded in the run of 1892 in the Cheyenne-Arapaho Territory. His great-grandfather, Frederick Bernhardt, homesteaded in the run of 1889 in the unassigned lands of Logan Country near Cushion, Oklahoma.
Bill Bernhardt attended school at Winnview Elementary School (one room school) and Omega High School in Kingfisher County. After graduating from high school in 1943, he enrolled at Southwestern Oklahoma State University and graduated in 1947 and 1948, receiving a B.S. degree in Biological Science and Chemistry in 1947 and a B.S. degree in Pharmacy in 1948. Between 1944 and 1947, he spent time in the U.S. Navy at Texas Christian University. While enrolled at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, he met Theta Juan Sickles from Longdale, Oklahoma. They were married June 30, 1948. Mrs. Bernhardt graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a B.A. degree in education in 1950. Theta Juan taught in Mid-Del City School system for six years while her husband attended the University Of Oklahoma School Of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. After her tenure in the educational field, Theta Juan spent most of her time raising four children and engaging in community activities in the Midwest City area.
Bill has spent many years helping build an outstanding medical complex in the Midwest City area. He has devoted much of his time to the Oklahoma Academy of Family Physicians where he has held every office from being a delegate to President of the OAFP. He has also held active positions in the American Academy of Family Physicians. He is a member of the American Medical Association and active in the Oklahoma State Medical Association. Bill has been trustee, treasurer, secretary, vice-president, and president of the University Of Oklahoma School Of Medicine Alumni Association. He is a member of the Board of Directors’ of the American Board of Family Practice and was recertified in 1990. His hospital affiliations include Midwest City, St. Anthony, Presbyterian, and South Community. He was named Oklahoma Family Physician of the Year runner-up in 1986. He is a clinical assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine.
His community activities include Regent for Rose Sate College, 1972-86; Midwest City YMCA; Director of American National Bank of Midwest City; Rotary Club; Toastmaster Club; Earlsboro Energies of Midwest City; Member of Midwest City Chamber of Commerce; and Deacon of the First Baptist Church in Midwest City. Bill is a lifetime member of the SWOSU Alumni Association and a member of the SWOSU Foundation and Development Board of Directors. Bill and Theta Juan have been married 43 years. They have four children: Michel, Valeria, William II, and Karis. All four children attended Midwest City schools.
