Bill Brewster

Congressman Bill Brewster - 1990

Bill Brewster, a Marietta resident who is also a Southwestern pharmacy school graduate, has had a rapid climb in the Oklahoma legislative ranks.  He has served as chairman of the House’s Economic Development and Business and Commerce Committees.  He also served recently as head of the House’s Tourism and Recreation Committee.  Brewster has also served on the state legislature’s special joint committee on International Development. 

The committee focuses on boosting Oklahoma’s economy by focusing on increasing cultural and educational exchanges among Oklahoma and other nations.  On the national level, Brewster has played a significant role in energy industry issues as chairman of the South/West Energy Council. 

The council is an organization of state legislators from the energy-producing states whose activities include working with Congress to encourage domestic energy production and to ensure the nation’s long-term energy security. 

Brewster is also the first Oklahoman to chair the Energy Committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).  The NCSL is an organization of state legislatures and legislative staff devoted to improving the state’s legislatures' effectiveness.  Representative Brewster’s extensive business experience includes being president and chief executive of two small businesses.  He also served 10 years on a bank’s board of directors.  He currently co-owns a real estate firm.  His agricultural background includes co-ownership of the Brewster Angus Farm since 1968.  He is a past president of the Oklahoma Angus Association and is an Oklahoma FFA Honorary State Farmer. 

The lawmaker’s long list of civic activities includes service as a school board member and a hospital board member.  He is also a member of the Lions Club and has served the American Cancer Society.  The Brewsters attend the Baptist Church.  Brewster, a registered pharmacist, was graduated from Southwestern in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy. 

He and his wife, Suzie, are the parents of three children:  Karel, their oldest daughter and her husband, Brent Howerton, live in Marietta.  Their other daughter, Kecia, and son, Kent, lost their lives in a tragic airplane accident earlier this year.  Bill is presently running for U.S. Congressman of the Third District which is presently held by Wes Watkins who is running for Governor of Oklahoma.
