Dr. Grace M. Burcham - 1985
Dr. Grace M. Burcham received a degree in English from Southwestern in 1937. She received her master’s degree in 1952 and a doctorate degree from Northern Colorado State University in 1961 in elementary education and reading. Her teaching career began in Hinton where she taught in 1934-36; Centralvue (Greer County) in 1936-42, and Lone Wolf in 1942-52. She taught at Central State University in 1952-53, and in Weatherford in 1953-55. She joined the Southwestern faculty in 1956, teaching until retirement in 1980.
She was a professor and chairman of Elementary Education. She was counselor of Kappa Delta Pi, member of the Teacher Education Selection and Retention Committee; Member, Teacher Education Cousin; Member, Gradate Council; Director, Reading Program, and Advisor, Undergraduate and Graduate Students. Dr. Burcham’s professional academic association memberships include; National Education Association, Oklahoma Education Association, International Reading Association, Oklahoma Reading Council, Association of Childhood Education International, southwest Reading Council, Custer County Classroom Teachers, Kappa Delta Pi, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Higher Education Alumni Association of Oklahoma.
Although retired form teaching, Dr. Burcham remains active as a member of the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce, president of the Weatherford Library Board, member and officer in PEO, president and officer of United Methodist Woman, president and officer in Wesleyan Service Guild, chairman of the Methodist Church Evangelism Commission, and a member of the Oklahoma and American Association of Retired Teachers and Persons. Dr. Burcham has written numerous publications and has served as a member and consultant of many state and national organizations.
