SAAC to Collect Change

April 24, 2007

WEATHERFORD, Okla. -- Student-athletes from Southwestern Oklahoma State University will be serving the Weatherford community as part of the first-ever Lone Star Conference Community Service Week.

The conference-wide project has been developed by the LSC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as a way for conference student-athletes throughout to unite in serving their local communities.

LSC Community Service Week encourages student-athletes at each institution to pick a project that will benefit their local area. The LSC SAAC representatives developed this initiative to promote team-building among student-athletes, coaches and administration while also volunteering to make a positive contribution in their communities.

“This week-long initiative is important to the Lone Star Conference because it shows how much we value our communities, plus it is evidence that LSC student-athletes are taking a leading role in shaping the future of this conference,” LSC commissioner Stan Wagnon said. “The current SAAC representatives are to be commended for their contributions in helping to make a difference, and I’m certain their level of interest and concern for the LSC and its communities is something that will carry over for years to come.”

While SWOSU are busy serving in Weatherford, athletes from the other 14 member institutions will be performing similar services in their own communities.

The SWOSU group has been collecting spare change for the Relay for Life, a cancer awareness project. The group has collected money at the Pack-the-Park Baseball/Softball Party and plans on again encouraging spectators to contribute at the Blue vs. White Spring Football Game Thursday night at Milam Stadium.

The Lone Star Conference has 15 member institutions, with eight in Texas, six in Oklahoma, and one in New Mexico. The LSC SAAC includes at least one representative from each member institution and is a committee comprised of student-athletes who provide insight on the student-athlete experience, while also offering input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect their lives on NCAA member institution campuses.
