Dewald Helps Bulldogs Gain Split with WTAM

February 20, 2006

Amarillo, TX - Another strong effort by hot-hitting Tanner Dewald was enough to lift Southwestern Oklahoma State baseball team to a 12-3 victory over West Texas A&M Monday in Amarillo, Texas. The win helped the Bulldogs salvage a split after the Buffs won the first game, 7-5.

Dewald (Sr., C, Morrison) blasted his third home run in four games and ended up with five RBI’s in the nightcap. His two-out homer in the third put the Bulldogs ahead 6-2 which was more than enough margin for freshman pitcher Gabe Winn to collect a win in his first start.

Winn (Fr., P, Sayre) allowed just three runs on seven hits in five innings of work. He struck out four and walked four while working out of trouble in the fourth when he loaded the bases before getting the third out on a ground ball.

Pitchers Kole Kennedy and Trey Dewald each pitched scoreless innings in relief and helped the Bulldogs improve their overall record to 2-2 on the year.

In the first game, West Texas A&M carried a 6-2 lead into the fifth before the Bulldogs awakened with a three-run outburst to cut the Buffs lead to 6-5. Garion Davenport and Levi Garrett each had RBI singles in the inning. SWOSU had a chance to break it open even more but Dewald and Ryan Pease failed to score runners and were the second and third outs of the inning.

The Bulldogs will play their first home game Wednesday against St. Gregory’s. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the SWOSU Athletic Complex located just north of campus.
