SWOSU Drops Four-Game Set to Javelinas

Kingsville, TX - Southwestern Oklahoma State was unsuccessful in four attempts to defeat nationally-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville in a Lone Star Conference baseball series completed Saturday at Kingsville, Texas.The Bulldogs lost a tough 4-3, 10-inning decision in the first game and appeared to have the wind taken out of them, losing the next three by scores of 16-1, 8-0 and 6-1. The losses left the Bulldogs at 8-8 on the year while the No. 9 Javelinas improved to 14-1 overall.
SWOSU used a spectacular pitching effort by Colby Tackett in the opener to force the extra-innings game. Tackett (Sr., RHP, Granite) held the Javelinas to just one run through nine complete innings.
The Bulldogs broke the 1-1 deadlock in their half of the tenth when Erik Horton and Garion Davenport scored to put SWOSU ahead 3-1. The Javelinas answered with three consecutive singles in the 10th to tie the game at 3-3. Tackett was lifted for reliever Kole Kennedy who gave up the game winning hit three batters later.
In Friday’s second game, TAMK went through four SWOSU pitchers, used four Bulldog fielding errors and generated 14 hits of their own for a 16-1 win.
Saturday, SWOSU generated only five hits and one run in 14 innings of play. The Bulldogs lone run came in the third inning of game two. Landon Thompson had an RBI single that scored Lance Scales to trim Kingsville’s lead to 3-1. The Javelinas added two run in the fourth and another in the fifth, finishing the sweep with a 6-1 win in the fourth and final game.
SWOSU will continue its LSC crossover play Friday when it hosts Eastern New Mexico in a four-game series in Weatherford. First pitch for Friday’s doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. with Saturday’s doubleheader slated for 12 p.m.
