Briggs Goes Distance in Win Over ASU

Weatherford - Southwestern Oklahoma State baseball pitcher Caleb Briggs battled his way through Angelo State’s hard-hitting line up and earned an impressive 7-2 win in the second game of a four-game series which completed Saturday in Weatherford.Briggs’ complete-game win allowed SWOSU to avoid a sweep against the Rams who had won Friday’s first game 3-2 and swept SWOSU 6-4 and 11-7 on Saturday. SWOSU’s overall record now stands at 15-13 while ASU improved to 21-10 on the year.
Briggs scattered just four hits and never was in serious trouble while improving his overall record to 3-0 on the year. He retired the first six batters he faced and didn’t allow a hit until the third inning. He ended the game striking out three and walking four batters.
SWOSU scored the bulk of its runs in a five-run third inning that was highlighted by a triple by Landon Thompson that scored Garion Davenport and Lance Scales. Both had reached on a single and were among six Bulldogs that got hits in the inning.
The Bulldogs added a run each in the fifth and sixth which was more than enough for Briggs who kept the Rams off balance with an assortment of pitches.
The four-game set against Angelo State concluded the Lone Star Conference South division crossover portion of their schedule at 8-12.
SWOSU begins the important North division play Wednesday when they travel to Southeastern Oklahoma State for a doubleheader in Durant.
The Bulldogs next home game will be Wednesday, April 5 against rival Central Oklahoma. Start time for the doubleheader is 2 p.m.
