Davenport's Homer Sparks SWOSU

April 25, 2006

EDMOND – Garion Davenport had two hits including a two-run homer that helped push Southwestern Oklahoma State to a 9-8 victory over Central Oklahoma in baseball action Sunday in Edmond.

Davenport’s homer, his team-leading fifth of the season, came in a seven-run fourth inning which resulted in a 9-1 lead for the visiting Bulldogs. Davenport’s homer scored teammate Landon Thompson who moments earlier cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple. Thompson’s triple, his sixth of the season, puts him atop the Lone Star Conference in that category.

The eight-run lead would prove just enough as UCO began to solve SWOSU starter Jeff Keller (3-2) in the eighth. The Bronchos added a run in the seventh to make it 9-4 and had their first three batters reach base in the eighth before SWOSU turned to normal starter Dustin Anderson.

Anderson, making his first relief appearance this season, worked into the ninth before giving way to Caleb Briggs. The Bronchos had closed to 9-8 and loaded the bases before Briggs go the final out on a fly ball to right.

SWOSU’s win came after the Bronchos had taken both ends of a doubleheader the previous day. UCO won Saturday’s game by scores of 13-6 and 10-4.

SWOSU’s record is now 20-28 overall and 5-15 in the Lone Star Conference. The Bulldogs close out the 2006 season Wednesday with a doubleheader against visiting Cameron and a three-game series with East Central starting Friday.
