Baseball Draws to Close

May 7, 2007

ABILENE, Texas – The magic that seemed to follow Southwestern Oklahoma State University for much of this baseball season quickly disappeared in the Lone Star Conference Tournament. The Bulldogs were sent home early thanks to consecutive losses to Angelo State and Abilene Christian in the first two rounds of the tournament.

SWOSU was beaten 4-1 Saturday against ASU and then were eliminated by ACU, the tournament’s top-seed, 12-0 the following day. The Bulldogs end the season with a 22-32 record.

The games were the last for outgoing Bulldog coach Charles Teasley, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Teasley finishes with a 192-230 record at SWOSU in nine years.

Against ACU, SWOSU managed just two hits against the Wildcats starter Brian Kennedy who kept the Bulldogs off balance with a wide variety of pitches.

ACU roughed up three different SWOSU pitchers with 15 hits and scored runs in six of the seven innings to take the run-ruled victory. A total of eight different Wildcats got hits, including three that finished with three each on the day.

On Saturday, SWOSU was not able to solve Angelo State starter Cody Broussard, scoring just once against the hard-throwing right hander. Brousard improved to 10-1 on the season.

Angelo State scored two runs in the second and fourth inning against SWOSU starter Chris Morrison who pitched well but got little offensive support. Morrison (5-5) yielded seven hits, all singles, while striking out three batters and walking two.

SWOSU’s only run came when Lance Scales led off the seventh with a single and then later scored on a single by Dakota Streber.
