WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University has successfully lured one of the top college coaches in the state of Oklahoma to take the controls of the Bulldog baseball program. Scott Selby, who guided the Southern Nazarene University baseball team for more than 10 years, will be introduced as the new SWOSU coach in a campus ceremony next week.
Selby becomes only the fifth Bulldog baseball coach in a span of more than 80 years and replaces Charles Teasley who retired after nine years with SWOSU.
The 42-year-old Selby and his teams won 30-or-more games seven times at SNU while compiling a 275-224 (55.1% winning percentage) record. This year SNU finished with a 35-21 record and a placed third in the NAIA’s respected Sooner Athletic Conference (12-8). Selby guided the Crimson Storm to the SAC championship game and a berth in the NAIA Region VI tournament. For the first time in school history, SNU claimed a win at the regional tournament, knocking off top-seeded and third-ranked Oklahoma City University in round two, 3-2. The Crimson Storm was eliminated from tournament play on Thursday, falling to No. 13 Texas Wesleyan, 7-0
SWOSU athletic director Cecil Perkins said the decision of hiring Selby will certainly bring a lot of excitement and enthusiasm to the Weatherford campus and the community.
“Scott brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. He has developed an outstanding baseball program pretty much from scratch at SNU.” Perkins said. “He knows Oklahoma, and he knows the Lone Star Conference. He’s a good fit for our University and for our baseball program. We’re extremely happy to have him on board.”
Perkins said the committee reviewed nearly 30 applicants before interviewing 10 finalists and considered Selby a natural fit.
“This is the best situation that we could’ve hoped for,” Perkins said. “I think it’ll be an easy transition for our players and his family.”
Selby, a Duncan native and a graduate of East Central University, began his coaching career at Yukon High School where he served as an assistant until being named the head baseball coach at SNU in 1998. Selby inherited a program that had just been reinstated and went 8-42 prior to his arrival.
“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve Southwestern and its baseball program,” Selby said. “I would like to thank (athletic director) Cecil Perkins and President (Dr. John) Hays for this chance to build a consistent winner at SWOSU. We have high expectations, and we will do all things in a first-class manner. We will be a program that everyone associated with the University, past and present, can be proud of. I look forward to the challenge.”
While at SNU, Selby earned two Conference Coach of the Year honors, in 1999 and 2005, and guided the baseball program to their only national ranking (#21 in 1999).
Selby and his wife Stacey have three children: Spencer (18, a freshman shortstop on SNU’s team), a daughter, Sydney (10), and a younger son, Seth (8).
