SWOSU Drops Opener, 5-2

March 28, 2008

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University had a number of chances but could not deliver when it mattered most losing 5-2 in to Southeastern Oklahoma State University in a baseball game Friday in Weatherford. The two teams continue their weekend series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs stranded 12 base runners, including leaving the bases loaded on three different occasions and pushed across just two runs in the nine-inning game. Southeastern was a bit more efficient collecting nine hits and leaving only seven players on the basepaths.

SWOSU’s two runs came in the fourth as Nelson Espinal walked with the bases loaded and Caleb Cole followed with an RBI single. The Bulldogs are now 8-21 and 6-18 in Lone Star Conference play.

Southeastern led from start to finish scoring three times in the first and adding a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. The Savage Storm moved to 16-16 overall and 14-11 in league play.

Travis Long was the loser on the mound, allowing seven hits in seven and one-third inning. Long allowed five runs, four of which were earned, and saw his record dip to 0-5 on the year.

Southeastern’s Luis Estrella picked up his third win in six decisions working into the seventh inning before giving way to reliever Brady Huckabee.
