Baseball Wins Game One

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University righted itself in big way taking the first game of a scheduled four from Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday in Weatherford. The Bulldogs were 9-7 winners in game one. The second game was suspended by the umpires because of darkness with it tied at 9-9 midway through the seventh inning. The two teams will resume the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

The wins improved SWOSU to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the Lone Star Conference. TAMUK dropped to 4-5 and 3-3 after the losses.

In the first game, SWOSU jumped out to an early 6-1 lead hung on for a 9-7 victory.

Tyler Powell's bases-loaded double was the highlight of a four-run fourth inning for the Bulldogs.

SWOSU pitcher Rafe Alvarez picked up the win by throwing one and one third innings in relief to even his record at 1-1. Alvarez took over in the fifth from starter Drake Accord who pitched well up to that point allowing just three runs through four and two-thirds inning.

At the plate SWOSU generated eight hits with Powell having three. The Javelinas had 12 hits but left 11 runners on base.

Kingsville threatened in the seventh, scoring four runs in the inning. However, Ty Pool came in and closed the game and allowed the Bulldogs to come away with a 9-7 win.
