Baseball Rallies Past Cavs

February 24, 2009

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University rallied past visiting St. Gregory's with a three-run ninth inning to pull out a 10-9 victory in a baseball game played Tuesday in Weatherford.

The win was SWOSU's fifth straight and raised the Bulldogs overall record to 9-6 on the season. SWOSU will return to Lone Star Conference play in its next game when it travels to West Texas A&M to play the Buffs in a four-game series starting Friday.

Tyler Powell's bases-loaded bunt forced the Cavs into a throwing error that allowed two runs to score including the winning run. Alexander Pagan, who was on third, beat the wild throw to the plate and once the ball rolled to the backstop Bow Buckner scooted around from second base to score the game winner.

Drake Accord picked up the win in relief as he worked one and one-third inning allowing two hits and two runs, both of which were unearned.

Powell was the offensive hero not only in the ninth inning but throughout the game. He finished the day with three hits and three RBIs. He had two-RBI double in the sixth that put the Bulldogs ahead 5-4.

SWOSU peppered four St. Gregory's pitchers with 16 hits. Two players, Kenny Hare and Ricky Kirby, who had been out of the lineup for the last four games, had two hits apiece in their return.
