Baseball Beats St. Greg's

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University stepped aside from its Lone Star Conference baseball schedule Tuesday and found easy work with a 14-8 victory over visiting St. Gregory's.

The win improved SWOSU to 14-8 on the year while St. Gregory's dipped to 4-7. The Bulldogs next play an important league series at Northeastern State University with doubleheaders set for Friday and Saturday afternoon in Tahlequah.

In the win against St. Gregory's, SWOSU trailed early 4-3 after one and one-half inning of play. The Bulldogs got the lead back and considerable more as they plated six runs in their half of the second. RBI doubles by Johnny Bertrand, Louie Lancaster and Travis Rose were all lead ups to what later came as a two-run home run by Jon Andrew Martin.

Martin's home run was his third of the season which ties him for the team lead along with Jason Stover and Rose.

Kyle Sayers picked up in relief after starter Shane Martin was bounced midway through the second. Sayers earned the win going six and one-thirds innings. He allowed eight hits and four runs while striking out eight batters and walking none. He improved to 1-2 with the win.

St. Gregory's did come back late scoring a pair of runs in the third and fourth to close to within one run at 9-8.

Rose again delivered coming up with an RBI single in the fourth and an RBI double in the fifth. He finished the game with four hits in five at bats with four RBIs.

SWOSU was back in front 10-8 after the fourth and the Cavaliers did not score again thanks to Sayers and reliever Alex Pagan who pitched a scoreless eighth for the Bulldogs.
