SWOSU Holds Off Cameron, 78-76

Weatherford, OK - Southwestern Oklahoma State put together one of its best offensive shooting sprees of the season and then hung on in frantic finish to upend Cameron, 78-76, in men’s basketball Monday in Weatherford.

Lonnie Cooks (5-10, Sr., G, Fort Worth, Texas) had 22 points to lead the Bulldogs to their second straight win and improve the team’s overall record to 5-15. The victory moved SWOSU alone into fourth place in the Lone Star Conference North division standings with a 2-3 record.

SWOSU had control for much of the game taking a 12-point (44-32) lead at the halftime break. The lead grew to 18 points at one occasion when Cooks drilled a three-pointer to push SWOSU’s advantage to 58-40 with 13:27 to play.

Cameron (11-6, 1-4) rallied late behind the guard tandem of Eric Moore and Matt Reid. Both players finished with 17 points for the Aggies. Cameron held SWOSU scoreless from the field in the last four minutes and a dunk by center Arthur Trousdell had the Aggies within two points at 78-76 with 11 seconds.

Cooks was fouled and sent to the line where he missed the front end of a one-and-one with 2.1 seconds to play. Cameron called timeout but their final shot attempt was foiled when Cooks stole the length-of-court inbound pass.

Cooks was joined in double figures by Jon Gunn with 19 points, Reggie Gunn with 15 points and Othello Alford with 12.

The Bulldogs ended the game shooting 48% (28-of-58) from the field after a sizzling first half in which they scored 44 points on 57% shooting.

SWOSU will next play Saturday at Texas A&M Commerce before returning home Wednesday, Feb. 8 to face East Central.
