Fan Jam To Mark Basketball Start
October 31, 2006
WEATHERFORD – Fan Jam, the wild and rowdy celebration that marks the beginning Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s basketball season, will take place Tuesday, Nov. 7 beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is free and seating will be made available at Rankin Williams Fieldhouse beginning at 6:30 p.m.Free posters, hot dogs, soda pop and the always popular “Fan Jam T-shirts” will be among the dozens of the prizes and items that will be given away to the students, faculty, staff and community expected to squeeze into the gymnasium.
The popular event, now in its eighth year, showcases the SWOSU men’s and women’s basketball teams in a variety of events and contests. Some of which will include a three-point shooting exhibition, a cash crawl and a dunk contest with university faculty and administrators serving as honorary judges.
Special performances will also be given by the SWOSU Cheerleading and Pom Pon squads. In addition, the SWOSU “Wild Dawg” Pep Band will perform a few selected numbers and the SWOSU Drum Line returns again after wowing last year’s crowd with a lengthy and loud percussion jam.
A pair of $250 book scholarships will be given away to a randomly selected student if they make a half court shot in the evening’s final event. The scholarship is sponsored by the SWOSU Alumni Association.
The SWOSU men, under the direction of new coach Todd Thurman, open the 2006-07 season at home against Arkansas Tech on Nov. 15. The women, under coach Shelly Pond, begin the season on the road against Lincoln University in Missouri.
