January 30, 2007
LAWTON – Southwestern Oklahoma State University could not protect a small lead in the game’s final minutes and watched as Cameron University rallied for a wild 101-100 win Monday night in Lawton.
Cameron’s Joseph Bolden’s runner put the Aggies ahead 101-100 with 12 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs called timeout and had two opportunities to come up with the winner but Nate Perry’s jumper and Jose Garcia’s follow were both off the mark.
The loss dropped SWOSU to 14-5 overall and 2-3 in the LSC North. Cameron improved to 11-8 and 2-3 in LSC North play.
Clarke Hale had 25 points and gave the Bulldogs their first lead since early in the game when he drilled a three-pointer to give SWOSU an 84-82 advantage with 8:15 to play. The Bulldogs turned up the defensive pressure and came away with several fast break layups because of it.
Marcus Millender scored on a layup to put the Bulldogs ahead 94-91. The lead was increased more when Millender fed a wide open Hale who scored to put SWOSU ahead 96-91 with 4:00 to play. The Bulldogs still led 100-97 when Jose Garcia sunk two free throws with 1:31 remaining. Cameron scored the game’s final four points including the two most important by Bolden.
In the first half SWOSU got out of the starting blocks in impressive fashion and had scored 21 points in the game’s first seven minutes. The Bulldogs had five-point leads on two separate occasions only to see Cameron come back. The Aggies had leads as many as six points late in the first half before settling for a 50-48 advantage going into the locker room.
SWOSU will next play Saturday against Texas A&M Commerce. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. in Weatherford.
