WEATHERFORD – Southwestern Oklahoma State University had its sights squaed on the basket even from the furthest of distances burying visiting Texas A&M-Commerce behind a three-point shooting effort that was among the best in school history. SWOSU scored over 100 points for the fifth time this year and came away with a 110-102 victory over TAMC Saturday in Weatherford.

Clarke Hale and Eric Payne led the scoring parade that saw the Bulldogs drain 18 three-pointers tying a school record set earlier this year. SWOSU was only one off the all-time Lone Star Conference mark of 19. Hale had 23 points and was five-of-10 from three point distance. Payne finished with 20 points and made six of his first eight attempts before misfiring on his last two.

The win lifted SWOSU to 15-5 overall and 3-3 in the LSC North Division. A&M-Commerce dipped to 10-11 and 3-3 in the division.

Lamar Searight scored 32 points for the Lions before fouling out late in the game.

SWOSU appeared ready to put the game away late in the second half when Hale’s three-pointer gave the Bulldogs a 93-80 lead with 4:44 remaining. The Lions didn’t go away easily and scored the game’s next 11 points. The Lions Bobby Joshua made it a two-point ball game when he sunk both free throws to trim SWOSU’s lead to 93-91 with 3:08 to play.

Nate Perry made a short basket inside and Hale was scored while being fouled on a fast break layup. Jose Garcia put home a slam dunk and the Bulldogs led 100-95 with 1:47 to play. This time SWOSU was able to hang on as Garcia made four free throws inside the final 15 seconds to prevent any hope of a Lion comeback.

SWOSU ended the game making 38-of-72 (53%) from the field and was a salty 18-of-37 (49%) from three-point distance. SWOSU outrebounded the Lions 41-30.

The Lions were just as accurate making 37-of-65 (57%) of their shots but made just nine-of-22 (41%) from three-point distance.

SWOSU’s next game will be Wednesday at East Central University. The Bulldogs return home Saturday for a matchup with nationally-ranked Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
