WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University beat back its sternest challenge yet winning its fifth straight game with a 76-74 victory over Southwest Baptist in the SWOSU Thanksgiving Classic Saturday in Weatherford.
The unbeaten Bulldogs, who were 84-65 winners against New Mexico Highlands Friday, now will meet defending Lone Star Conference champion Midwestern State University Thursday, Nov. 29 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Trevor Guy drilled back-to-back three pointers that helped put the Bulldogs over the top against a gritty SBU squad. Guy, who ended up as Classic’s MVP, gave the Bulldogs a 74-69 lead with 1:44 to play. He then made good on another trey to put SWOSU in command 76-71 with 53 seconds to play.
Nate Perry had 18 points and Clarke Hale added 17 to lead the Bulldogs in scoring.
SBU, which was led by D’Ante Harris with 29 points, climbed back into the game late after trailing throughout. Harris drilled his ninth trey of the game to put SBU ahead 66-61 with 5:34 to play.
The Bulldogs answered as Perry and Hale each swished four consecutive free throws and Kendall Smith put SWOSU back in front at 68-66 with 3:52 to play on a high-arcing three-point basket.
SWOSU again got a defensive lift by the hustle of Abdullah Lawal who finished the game with a lucky statistic line with seven points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
The victory over NHMU on Friday was much easier as SWOSU led 46-19 at halftime and pushed it to a 31-point margin before having it trimmed within 20 in garbage time.
Guy had 22 points to lead SWOSU in scoring while Smith added 18 against NMHU.
