SWOSU Revs Engines in Win

December 29, 2007

WEATHERFORD, Okla.– Southwestern Oklahoma State University showed no signs of holiday rust cranking up its engines in a 93-74 runaway victory over Colorado-Colorado Springs Saturday in Weatherford. The win improved the No. 8 ranked Bulldogs to 10-1 and sets them up for a return to Lone Star Conference play next week with road trips looming against Abilene Christian and Angelo State.

Trevor Guy scored 15 points and three other players joined him in double figures as SWOSU set a season-high point total. Clarke Hale and Kendall Smith added 14 points while Nate Perry chipped in with 12 for the Bulldogs.

UC-Colorado Springs was led by Frank McCollum with 24 points. The Mountain Lions are now 5-6 on the year.

The Bulldogs regained their shooting touch after struggling from the field in their last game, a 54-51 loss at Fort Hays State University. SWOSU made 54% of its shots on 34-of-63 attempts. The Bulldogs were also effective from long range making 12-of-27 three-point attempts for 44%.

SWOSU built a lead into twin figures when Perry scored with 8:16 to play in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 22-12 lead. The margin grew to 21 when Jose Garcia swished home a three-pointer in the closing seconds, giving the Bulldogs a 45-24 lead at halftime.

The Bulldogs grew their lead to 30 in the second half when Smith and Hale got hot from long distance. The duo made back-to-back treys and SWOSU was ahead 71-41 with 10:32 to play.

The lead stayed at 29 until late when the Mountain Lions cut it back to 19 against the SWOSU reserves.
