Men Take Apart NSU
January 19, 2008
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University turned a tight ballgame into a runaway and made its first road game in the Lone Star Conference’s North Division an easy victory with a 63-44 drubbing of Northeastern State University.
SWOSU, the 17th ranked team in NCAA Division II, improved to 14-3 overall with the win and stayed unbeaten at 2-0 in the LSC North Division. NSU slipped to 8-8 and 1-1 in the division.
Trevor Guy had 16 points and 11 rebounds and helped spark SWOSU’s second-half charge that left the RiverHawks scratching their head in bewilderment. The Bulldogs scored the first 11 points to begin the second half and turned a three-point halftime cushion into a 14-point margin.
Guy hit four free throws in the stretch, Clarke Hale connected on a three-pointer and Jose Garcia scored while being fouled. Garcia’s free throw gave SWOSU a 40-29 lead with 15:12 to play.
The margin would eventually swell to 23 points before NSU hit a pair of three-pointers in the last minute to make it a 19-point ballgame.
SWOSU outrebounded NSU 37-26 and made two fewer turnovers then the RiverHawks(nine-to-11). The Bulldogs made 47% of their shots on 21-of-45 attempts while holding NSU to just 36% on 17-of-47 attempts.
SWOSU will next play Wednesday, Jan. 23 at home against Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
