SWOSU put on a dazzling showcase of spectacular dunks and crowd-pleasing three pointers to capture its first Lone Star Conference North Division win in four tries. The victory improved the Bulldogs to 7-12 overall and brings forward a critical game Saturday at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in their chase for a post-season tournament bid.
SWOSU got 23 points from Damian Henderson. Charleston Flemmings added 19 while Chancellor Jones chipped in with 18 points to lead the Bulldogs scoring attack.
ECU, now losers of nine straight, were led by Maurice Abraham with 16 points. The Tigers fell to 5-13 and 0-4 with the loss.
SWOSU wasted no time taking the upper hand against the outmatched Tigers. The Bulldogs were up 17-1 after Ross Moore banged home a three-pointer with 15:00 to play in the first period. SWOSU's lead grew to 24 points later in the half when Jones broke free and rocked the rim with a thunderous dunk to put the Bulldogs ahead 41-14 with 2:22 to play in the half.
SWOSU took a 43-19 lead into the break.
The second half was much of the same for SWOSU. More dunks came from Jones including a well-timed alley-oop lob that put the Bulldogs ahead 65-40 with 6:22 to play. The Bulldogs led by as many as 30 at one point and put an exclamation point on the win in the closing seconds. Henderson took a pass off the backboard and threw down another emphatic dunk that sent the crowd into a frenzy as the Bulldogs celebrated an important win.
SWOSU ended the game making a season-best 59% of its shots from the field on 34-of-58 attempts. The Bulldogs were six-for-16 from three-point distance. ECU meanwhile managed just 33% from the field on 15-of-45 attempts. The Tigers missed all seven of their three-point attempts.
The Bulldogs outrebounded ECU by a 40-27 margin. SWOSU's Ty Pace led all players with 11 rebounds in the game.
