Bulldogs Hold Off ATU, Win 49-48

December 22, 2005

Weatherford - Southwestern Oklahoma State hit critical baskets down the stretch and withstood a determined effort by Arkansas Tech to come away with a 49-48 victory in women’s basketball action Wednesday in Weatherford.

Julie Dawson (6-0, Sr., F, Arnett) had 11 points and scored back-to-back baskets after ATU had sliced a 14-point SWOSU lead to just four with eight minutes to play. Dawson’s short jumper gave SWOSU a 47-39 lead with 6:18 to play.

Kayla Horn (6-0, Jr., F, Hydro) led SWOSU with 13 points, all of which came in the first half as the Bulldogs build at 32-19 halftime lead. The Bulldogs improved to 5-6 with the win.

ATU, which entered the game on a seven-game winning streak, was led by Christy Mahan with 16 points. The loss dropped the Golden Suns to 7-2 on the year. ATU’s only two losses this season have both come to SWOSU.

The Bulldogs scored only two points in the final six minutes, and none in the final four minutes of play. Dru Tomaszewski (5-10, Jr., F, San Antonio) scored on a layup to give SWOSU a 49-42 lead with 4:07 to play.

Mahan then brought ATU back with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to trim SWOSU lead to 49-48 with 40 seconds to play.

SWOSU then used the clock effectively in the final seconds keeping ATU on the defensive end. SWOSU’s Andrea Oldham (6-0, Jr., C, Stigler) came up with a big offensive rebound with three seconds to play that effectively sealed the game and prevented the Golden Suns from attempting a potential game-winning shot.
