SWOSU Women Upend Angelo State, 63-53

January 16, 2006

San Angelo, TX- Southwestern Oklahoma State again used a matchup against Angelo State to raise its game and upset the nationally-ranked Rambelles, 63-53, Saturday in San Angelo, Texas.

SWOSU (7-8) got 22 points from Julie Dawson (6-0, Sr., C, Arnett) and Kayla Horn (6-0, Jr., F, Hydro) added 19 points for the Bulldogs who played perhaps their best game of the year.

Dawson, who has 20 or more points in back-to-back games, ended a 13-2 SWOSU run with a pair of free throws building the Bulldogs lead to 53-42 with four minutes to play. The score was tied 10 times and the lead changed nine other times, but none beyond halftime with SWOSU in command.

ASU, which entered the game ranked No. 21 in the NCAA Division II poll, fell to 11-4. The Rambelles were led in scoring by Britanee Davis with 17 points.

The impressive win was the second time that SWOSU has beaten ASU on its homecourt in recent years. SWOSU upset ASU, the league’s regular-season champion, 70-55, in the first round of the LSC Tournament in 2003.

Last year, the two teams engaged in what was considered one of the most entertaining games in recent memory before ASU emerged with a 100-98 overtime victory in Weatherford.

The Bulldogs now will exclusively play teams from the LSC North for the remainder of the schedule as division play begins. SWOSU first division game will be Wednesday at East Central with tipoff set for 6 p.m. SWOSU returns home for a men and women’s doubleheader against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21.
