SWOSU Women Fall in Overtime

Weatherford, OK - Southwestern Oklahoma State guard Niki Sloan delivered shot-after-shot but didn’t connect on the one that mattered most as the Bulldogs dropped an 83-82 women’s basketball game to East Central University Wednesday in Ada.Sloan (5-9, Sr., G, Stigler) had her best game of the season scoring 25 points while making seven of her first eight three-point attempts. She had one more opportunity as the Bulldogs were awarded possession under their basket with 1.9 seconds and trailing by a point. The ball went to Sloan who had a clean look but the shot bounced away as the horn sounded.
The loss dropped SWOSU’s record to 7-9 overall and 0-1 in Lone Star Conference North Division play. ECU, improved to 7-8 and 1-0 in division play.
Sloan got plenty of help early by the play of forward Kayla Horn who tied for scoring honors with 25. Horn (6-0, Jr., F, Hydro) had 19 points in the first half but sit much of the second half after picking up her fourth foul with 11 minutes to play.
SWOSU sent the game into overtime when Julie Dawson drained a three-pointer with 31 second remaining, tying it at 70-70. Dawson (6-0, Sr., F, Arnett) finished with 19 points on seven-of-15 shooting.
ECU was led by Lacey Goldwire who had 23 points.
ECU scored the first five points in overtime and led 75-70 before Sloan connected on her sixth three-pointer to bring the Bulldogs to within two at 75-73 with 3:16 to play. Sloan buried another three to bring SWOSU closer yet at 83-82 with 41 seconds to play.
SWOSU missed two attempts to win the game in the closing seconds. Dawson’s shot was ruled a block with three seconds to play and Sloan misfired on a three at the buzzer.
The Bulldogs will return home Saturday to face Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Rankin Williams Fieldhouse.
