Dawson Carries Bulldogs Past UCO
January 21, 2006
Weatherford, OK - Southwestern Oklahoma State got a game-high 20 points from star forward Julie Dawson and shook off slumping Central Oklahoma down the stretch for a 70-57 win during a women’s basketball game Wednesday at Weatherford. While Dawson (6-0, Sr., F, Arnett) had plenty of help, no one stepped up more than her as she drilled seven-of-14 shots from the field, including making two critical three-pointers when UCO began to inch closer. It was the 14th consecutive game in which Dawson has scored double figures or more.
Andrea Oldham (6-0, Jr., F, Stigler) had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs who improved their overall record to 9-9 overall and 2-1 in the Lone Star Conference North Division play.
UCO, losers of five straight, were led in scoring by Lacie Allen with 17 points. The Bronchos are now 3-15 overall and 0-3 in the LSC North.
The Bulldogs pushed their lead to as many as 15 points when Jessica Bailey (5-9, Fr., F, Allen) buried a three-pointer to give SWOSU a 54-39 lead with 9:29 to play.
The Bronchos awoke and managed to chip away at SWOSU’s lead, drawing within five points (56-51) when Meghan Craig scored at the 5:59 mark. The rally ended at that point when Dawson swished back-to-back three pointers to put the Bulldogs up by 11, allowing them to relax for a 13-point victory.
SWOSU will next play Saturday at three-time LSC North Champ Northeastern State University. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KWEY 95.5 FM or can be hear via webcast by clicking on the “Listen Live” link on the front of the SWOSU athletic homepage www.swosu.edu/athletics.
