Bulldogs Take Over First, Defeat Aggies

January 30, 2006

Weatherford, OK - Southwestern Oklahoma State’s climb to the top of the Lone Star Conference North Division women’s basketball standings has not been easy. Now staying there appears will be even tougher.

Coach Shelly Pond and her Bulldogs beat back a spirited challenge by Cameron University to win 62-55 Monday in Weatherford. The victory put SWOSU at 11-9 overall and 4-1 in the LSC North, one-half game ahead of Texas A&M-Commerce who is at 3-1.

SWOSU got 26 points from star Julie Dawson (6-0, Sr., F, Arnett) and broke open a tight ball game with some clutch shooting down the stretch. SWOSU never trailed in the second half but did watch as the Aggies got within one point on two different occasions.

Cameron was still close late when Chelsea Turner scored to trim SWOSU’s lead to 53-50 with 3:27 remaining. Dawson then delivered her biggest shot of the night, swishing a three-pointer giving SWOSU a 56-50 lead with 2:29 to play.

SWOSU would later build its margin to 11 before Cameron hit a pair of baskets in the final minute to produce the final, 62-55.

Kayla Horn (6-0, Jr., F, Hydro) was the only other player in double figures for SWOSU. She had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Cameron, which was led by Brittany Cooksey with 18 points, fell to 11-9 and 2-3.

SWOSU will next play Saturday at Texas A&M-Commerce before returning home Wednesday, Feb. 8 to host East Central.
