Bulldogs Get Past ECU, Remain in First

Weatherford, OK - Southwestern Oklahoma State withstood a determined effort by East Central and kept hold of its lead atop the Lone Star Conference North women’s basketball standings with a 65-58 victory Wednesday. The victory improved SWOSU to 12-10 overall and 5-2 in the LSC North.

Julie Dawson (6-0, Sr., F, Arnett) had 19 points and Kayla Horn and Andrea Oldham each chipped in with 18 for the Bulldogs who relied heavily on their expert marksmanship from the charity stripe.

SWOSU ended the game making 28-of-32 (88%) from the free throw line, including 13-of-14 (94%) during the last two minutes. Dawson scored the Bulldog’s last field goal with 3:55 to play to give SWOSU a 52-45 lead.

ECU, which was led by Jastin Flenory with 14 points, managed to cut the lead to one (52-51) with 2:11 to play. The Bulldogs then clamped down on defense and limited the Tigers offensively the rest of the way.

SWOSU did not shoot well making just 17-of-48 (35%) shots the field but ECU was worse. The Tigers made 17-of-58 (29%) attempts for the game but only seven-of-27 (26%) in the second half.

SWOSU will next play Saturday when it meets Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant. The two teams provided for an entertaining game in their last outing with SWOSU emerging in an 83-74 shootout.
