SWOSU Clinches Share of LSC North Title

February 18, 2006

Weatherford, OK - Shooting, passing, rebounding and every other aspect of the basketball game Southwestern Oklahoma State dominated visiting Northeastern State rolling to a 67-51 victory Saturday in Weatherford. Andrea Oldham had 20 points and Julie Dawson added 16 points for the Bulldogs who won their fourth straight game and improved to 15-10 on the year.

The win assured SWOSU no worse than a tie for the Lone Star Conference North Division title as the Bulldogs are owners of an 8-2 record and a two-game lead with two remaining. The LSC division title is SWOSU’s second ever and the first since the 1997-98 season, the Bulldogs first full year as an NCAA Division II member.

SWOSU, the league’s best rebounding team, again showed its muscle underneath clearing the boards and limiting NSU to just one shot. SWOSU ended the game with a 35-16 edge and only allowed the Lady Reds one offensive rebound.

NSU, the three-time LSC North champ, fell to 17-8 overall and 6-4 in league play. No player reached double figures, only reserve Susan Snell had more than eight points, finishing with nine.

SWOSU used a 13-2 run over the final four minutes of the first half to take command of the game. Dawson, Oldham and Kayla Horn each had baskets and helped carry the Bulldogs to a 36-24 halftime cushion.

The Bulldogs pushed even more in the second half building their lead to as many as 21 points before settling for the 16-point cushion.

SWOSU finished the game making 24-of-45 (53%) while allowing NSU to make just 19-of-44 (43%) of its shots.

The Bulldogs continue LSC North play Monday as they visit Cameron University in a men’s and women’s doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on KWEY 95.5 FM and via the internet by clicking on the “Listen Live” link at www.swosu.edu/athletics.
