Surging SWOSU Knocked Off by Cameron

February 20, 2006

Weatherford, OK - Southwestern Oklahoma State’s late-season romp through its conference basketball schedule was knocked off track Wednesday following a 58-44 loss to Cameron in Lawton.

The Bulldogs (15-11), winners of eight of their last nine games, were poised to wrap up sole ownership of the Lone Star Conference North Division title with a victory but little went right in the lopsided loss. Still, SWOSU remains in first in the LSC North at 8-3 and will have a second chance Saturday to clinch the title when it hosts Texas A&M-Commerce at 1 p.m.

Andrea Oldham had 17 points and Kayla Horn added 13 points for the Bulldogs who struggled offensively and were held to their second-lowest season scoring total on the year. SWOSU made just 29% (17-of-59) of its shots and were an uncharacteristically erratic at the free throw line making just 40% on eight-of-20 attempts.

Cameron, now 15-11 and 6-5 in division play, was led by Brittany Cooksey with 20 points.

The Aggies led throughout the game and were up 18-7 when Melissa Steen knocked down a three-pointer eight minutes into the game. Cameron led by as many as 15 points in the first half before settling on 33-19 halftime cushion.

SWOSU did rally late to chop Cameron’s lead to under double digits. Oldham hit a short jumper to close the margin to 51-42 with 2:15 to play. The Bulldogs went cold and did not score until the last few seconds allowing the Aggies to return to their comfortable lead.
