November 26, 2006
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University managed to split a pair of women’s basketball games played Friday and Saturday at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Ark. The Bulldogs were 49-46 winners against Ouachita Baptist University Friday and fell Saturday to Arkansas Tech by a 60-46 margin.
SWOSU’s record is now 2-3 on the young season and the Bulldogs have two more road games before playing their first home game Thursday, Dec. 7.
Andrea Oldham had 11 points and teammate Amber Hammock added 10 points as the Bulldogs hung on for a hard-fought victory over OBU in the first game. Neither team shot well but the Bulldogs did fair slightly better connecting on 20-of-58 shots for 34% while the Tigers made just 12-of-41 attempts for an anemic 29%.
Oldham gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 37-36 with a short jumper at the 9:48 mark. OBU stayed within striking distance until freshman Jenna Sprague followed her own miss with an important put back giving SWOSU a 45-41 with 4:34 to play.
SWOSU used a 43-33 advantage in the rebounding category to help compensate for the off-shooting performance.
Against ATU, SWOSU emerged from the starting blocks slowly and fell behind 17-7 after the first nine minutes of play. The Bulldogs continued their struggles from the offensive end and slipped even further trailing 34-20 at the break.
SWOSU’s Trenice Hines, who led the Bulldogs with 14 points, got her team within striking distance midway through the second half when she scored and was fouled. Hines made her free throws and ATU’s lead had been reduced to nine points at 48-39 with nine minutes to play.
ATU responded quickly scoring the next five points and pushed their margin back to a more comfortable cushion at 14 points.
Hines was the only SWOSU player to reach double figures in scoring as the Bulldogs made just 19-of-56 shots attempted for 34%.
Christy Mahan had 16 points to lead the Golden Suns who improved to 2-2 with the win.
