Women Beaten by Buffs, 68-36

CANYON, Texas – Southwestern Oklahoma State University again found itself playing one of the nation’s top-ranked NCAA Division II women’s basketball teams and like the previous two other times were beaten convincingly. This time fifth-ranked West Texas A&M was the opponent as the Buffs bettered the Bulldogs by a 68-36 margin.
SWOSU fell to 2-5 on the year, three of those losses – Emporia State, Washburn and now WTAMU – have come against teams nationally ranked.
The Bulldogs managed to make just 11-of-43 (26%) of their shots against the Buffs pressure defense and turned the ball over another 28 times. Jessica Bailey and Andrea Oldham each had 11 points to lead SWOSU in scoring.
WTAM, now 7-1 on the year, were led by the reigning Lone Star Conference player of the year sophomore Emily Brister with 23 points.
The Bullldogs stayed close early and had it tied for the fifth time at 12-12 when Trenice Hines scored on a short jumper with 12:09 to play in the first half. WTAMU then went on a 20-1 run and were up 32-13 with 2:25 to play and in control from that point forward.
In the second half SWOSU missed 20 of their 24 attempts from the field and watched as the Buffs slowly added to their 15-point halftime cushion.
SWOSU will be greeted warmly in its belated return home for its first home game of the season set for Thursday, Dec. 7 against Midwestern State. The men’s and women’s doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
