WEATHERFORD – Southwestern Oklahoma State University was unable to shake the effects of a late-game scoring drought and were handed a 61-55 setback by visiting Midwestern State University in a women’s basketball game Thursday.

The Bulldogs scored four points in the game’s final six minutes and watched the Mustangs take control down the stretch. The loss was SWOSU’s fifth straight and dropped the Bulldogs to 2-6 on the year while MSU improved to 3-3 with the win.

Jessica Bailey had 15 points and gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the second half at 44-41 with 11:48 to play after sinking a pair of free throws. Both teams stayed tight with each other and the Bulldogs managed to tie it at 51-51 when Dru Tomaszewski scored on a layup with 6:02 to play.

MSU then scored the game’s next seven points and were ahead for good after Stacey Staten’s jumper gave the Mustangs a 58-51 lead with 3:27 to play.

The Bulldogs had one of their best shooting efforts of the season making 22-of-51 field goal attempts for 43%. However, turnovers again cost the team critical points as SWOSU coughed up the ball 21 times on its offensive possessions compared to 14 for its opponent.

The Bulldogs will hope for better results Saturday when they host Lincoln University. SWOSU beat the Blue Lions 60-54 in the season opener for both teams. Gametime is at 2 p.m.
