January 5, 2007
KINGSVILLE, Texas – Southwestern Oklahoma State University survived a stirring rally by its opponent but managed to hang on for a hard-fought 63-60 win over Texas A&M Kingsville Thursday in women’s basketball action.
The Bulldogs, winners of three of their last four, are now 5-7 as they head into Saturday’s game against Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas.
Trenice Hines had a season-high 17 points and made four consecutive free throws in the closing seconds to keep the Bulldogs in front of the scrappy Javelinas. SWOSU ended the game making 10-of-12 free throws in the second half and needed all of them as TAMUK got hot from three-point range late.
SWOSU carried a 10-point cushion all the way to the four minute mark. The Bulldogs last basket from the field was a three-pointer by Grace Anne Jones with 4:95 to play to put SWOSU ahead 54-45.
TAMUK, which dropped to 3-9, scrambled back and drained three consecutive three pointers in the game’s final 40 seconds to make things interesting. The Javelinas even had a chance to tie the game but Jasmine June misfired on her three-point attempt as the buzzer sounded.
Andrea Oldham had 11 points and Jessica Bailey added 10 points to complete the double figure scorers for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs had one of their better shooting efforts of the year making 22-of-48 attempts for 46%.
