Women Lose to Pioneers

DENTON – Southwestern Oklahoma State University saw its two-game winning streak come to a quick end as the Bulldogs were defeated 62-49 by Texas Woman’s University in a basketball game Saturday in Denton, Texas.

SWOSU got a season-high 17 points from Trenice Hines but little else as the Bulldogs overall record dipped to 5-8 on the year. TWU, which improves to 8-6 on the year, was led by Margaret Wimbish with 18 points.

The Bulldogs fell behind early and trailed 19-9 after eight minutes of play. Hines then got hot and led a 15-6 run that brought the Bulldogs back into the game. Her basket at the 4:54 mark trimmed TWU’s lead to one at 25-24. The Bulldogs would get not score again in the half and the Pioneers re-established control taking a 35-24 lead into the locker room.

The Bulldogs best chance in the second half came when Grace Anne Jones connected on a basket to bring SWOSU with six points at 40-34 with 13:28 to play. The Bulldogs would not get any closer as TWU stretched its advantage back to double figures before winning by the final margin of 13.

The Bulldogs made just 17-of-49 (35%) while TWU was only marginally better making 21-of-53 (39%) attempts. SWOSU turned the ball over 23 times and were outscored in the paint area 22-8.

Andrea Oldham was the only other double figure scorer for SWOSU with 11 points.

SWOSU will next play at home Thursday, Jan. 11 against Abilene Christian University. Tipoff for the women’s game is at 6 p.m.
